SZCZAWNICA

Tourist trail: Palenica

A short, scenic hike to Palenica is perfect for a family stroll or as a warm-up to mountain trekking in the Pieniny. You can reach the summit either on foot or via the convenient cable car. The trail leads directly from the center of Szczawnica up to Palenica, where you can take in breathtaking views of the Pieniny, the Gorce Mountains, and, on a clear day, even the Tatras. At the top, you’ll find not only a viewpoint but also attractions for children and dining options.

Distance 2.3 km

Estimated time 1 h

Elevation gain 309 m

Route: Szczawnica Center – Palenica (45 min; 1.6 km) – Szafranówka (15 min; 700 m)

The hike begins in the center of Szczawnica, right next to the lower station of the Palenica chairlift. Hikers follow the yellow trail, which quickly leads into the forest, and after about 45 minutes of climbing, reach the summit. Alternatively, you can take a convenient, short ride on the chairlift.

At Palenica, a viewing terrace awaits, along with a summer sledding track (gravity slide), a small mountain inn, and benches where you can relax and soak in the mountain views.

It’s also worth continuing a little further to Szafranówka, which offers an excellent panorama of the Pieniny, Gorce, Beskid Sądecki, and Wyspowy ranges. In winter, the area operates as a ski resort with slopes of varying difficulty. More details about the resort and trails can be found on page 46.

The descent back to Szczawnica takes around 30 minutes, but it’s worth considering a longer, more scenic route. One option leads through Slovak Lesnica and along the picturesque Pieniny Road by the Dunajec. Another passes by Orlica Shelter and the Grajcark promenade. Depending on the chosen route, the entire hike can take up to three hours.
