On May 1, 2025, after more than 50 years of absence, a tradition that had almost vanished came back to life in full force, attracting crowds. This exceptional celebration, held near the Homole Gorge, showed that shepherding is not just a profession — it’s a way of life and part of the heritage of the Pieniny Mountains.

Redyk marks the ceremonial start of the shepherding season — the symbolic moment when bacowie (head shepherds) lead their flocks of sheep up to the mountain pastures. But before the sheep set off, something extraordinary happens — the mixing of the flocks.

This age-old custom brings together sheep from many owners, entrusting them to a single baca, who will care for them throughout the summer. The sheep are mixed, forming one large flock. Each animal bears distinctive marks — cuts in the ears or color markings — so that at the end of the season they can be returned to their rightful owners. This ritual is a true symbol of trust, community, and shepherding responsibility.

After decades of silence, Jaworki once again echoed on May 1, 2025, with the sound of trombity (traditional wooden horns) and the bleating of sheep — this year’s Spring Redyk was a genuine return to the roots. A tradition that had nearly faded now attracts crowds, reminding us that shepherding is not just a trade, but a way of life and a heritage.
